It’s a beautiful day in Brooklyn. The pup and I went to the park and I took a few photos. But as I was walking back home I saw a few scantily clad pre-teen girls that just broke my heart and they reminded me of a piece I did for Xhibitp around the same time last year.
The piece is about the importance of contextualizing the images of black women that are portrayed in the media, reminding everyone to “know your history.” It touches on video vixens and the modern day exploitation/celebration of the “black booty,” while giving us a history lesson on the origins of the hyper-sexualization of the black women in Western society via Sara Baartman aka The Hottentot Venus
